The Border & Immigration Agency, as part of its comprehensive programme to reform Britain's immigration controls, has today announced that businesses must source migrant labour through legal means or face severe penalties.

From 30 November 2007 the academic technology approval scheme (ATAS) will become a mandatory requirement for students intending to enter or remain in the UK for more than 6 months to undertake postgraduate studies or research in certain designated subjects.

As of today, Chartered Quantity Surveyors have been added to the National Shortage Occupation List with the result that work permit applications for Chartered Quantity Surveyors will no longer need to be subject to a full resident labour test.
