Tier 1 of the Points-Based System consists of four separate categories:
-
Tier 1 (General): This category is for "highly skilled" workers seeking to come to the UK in order to either enter into employment or self-employment. Unlike Tier 2, a Tier 1 (General) migrant does not have to have a job offer in place prior to arriving in the UK. Tier 1 (General) replaces the Highly Skilled Migrant Programme.
- Tier 1 (Investor): This category is for high net worth individuals seeking to come to the UK in order to make a substantial financial investment within the UK.
- Tier 1 (Entrepreneur): This category is for individuals seeking to invest in the UK by setting up or taking over, and being actively involved in the running of one or more businesses within the UK.
- Tier 1 (Post-Study Work): This category allows international graduates who have studied in the UK to temporarily work in the UK without being sponsored by a UK employer under the Points Based System. Most commonly, this category provides a bridge to Tier 1 (General) or Tier 2.
